Things To Consider When Choosing A Car Detailing Service

What is the Included Protection Level?

What protective products does the detailing package offer and what is the rated durability of the products? This is important because detailing is about protection and maintenance, not car washing.

Regular waxes protect for up to 3 months. However, there are better options available. There are options that provide protection for 6+ months, 1 year, 3 years, or even permanent protection. Ask the detailer what products they are using, like wax, paint sealant, ceramic sealant, or ceramic coating, and their brand names.

What cleaning and processes does the detail include?

Is the service a basic wash and wax, vacuuming and glass cleaning or something more involved that includes better protective products, more thorough cleaning, decontamination processes, santizing processes, deep cleaning, clay bar decontamination or polishing and paint correction?

Does the detail include overlooked areas such as door jambs, door edges, moonroof tracks, glass tops and edges, dust extraction, ozone odor treatment, animal hair removal, tree sap removal, tar removal, more involved wheel cleaning including barrels, calipers, and wheel wells or other areas of the vehicle that may be overlooked in a basic detail service?

Pricing Structure

Is the price fixed and inclusive of all work, or can it change once the detailing service is at your location?  Ask if there are different rates for cars, SUVs, trucks, and minivans. Is the price quoted an "as low as," price or is it a fixed and all inclusive price?

Product Quality and Safety

Ask if the products being used by the auto detailer are completely safe for automotive paints and plastics and safe for the various surfaces in your vehicle such as infotainment screens, glass, plastic, leather, vinyl, fabric, headliner material, rubber and plastic trim, wheel faces, headlights and taillights.

Improper products can cause damage and wear that may not be visible immediately after work is completed but will show up later in the form of increased wear, material degradation and easier soiling and staining. Are the products being used safe for the vehicle occupants including those with sensitivies? Ask to see product labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) so you can do your own research.

Will the Products Used Leave Behind Scents, Grease, or Residue

Is the detailer using scented products, air fresheners, oils, greasy products, residue, or shiny interior products on dashboards? Scented products can mask incomplete cleaning and cause issues for people with sensitives to scents and chemicals. Glare inducing treatments on dashboards can cause safety and visibility issues.

What Type of Ceramic Coating Does the Detailing Service Install?

If you are shopping for a ceramic coating or ceramic paint protection, it is important to consider the type and quality level of the product being offered. There are two main types of ceramic coatings, professional level or consumer grade. Professional level ceramic coatings are durable multi-year and permanent coatings with a written warranty. Consumer grade ceramic coatings vary greatly in quality with durabilities from 3 months to 1 year and offer no warranty.

There are two main ceramic coating chemistry types, Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Silicon Dioxide (Si02). Silicon Carbide has a base of Industrial Diamond. Silicon Dioxide has a base of Industrial Quartz. Silicon Carbide is the more durable of the two types and is permanent bonding offering a one time installation. Silicon Dioxide ceramic coatings will need periodic refreshers and toppers.

What Certifications and Training Does the Detailer Have?

Is the person detailing the car certified in detailing by an organization like the International Detail Association? Has the detailer and person doing the work received in person training from a detailing chemical or ceramic coating company? Do they hold certifications and training from a product manufacturer?

Is the Detailer Licensed and Insured?

This is important for your protection. For many of us our vehicles are our second most valuable assets. The people who work on our vehicles must have the appropriate licenses and insurance. This is important to give us peace of mind and protect our property.

Mobile Service or Shop

Does the service require you to take your vehicle to a shop, or is it mobile? Does the mobile service provider bring everything needed, like water, electricity, and shade tents or canopies? If work is done at a shop, how long will the shop keep your vehicle?
